Bands: Too numerous to mention. Played in all capacities, studio, pit orchestras, symphonic, live, all types of music…but Witsend/Syzygy is the only rock band in which I have played.

Musical Training: Numerous and varied. Studied at conservatory level and privately. Informal and formal. Never studied kit playing. Dante Piccioti was also a teacher but he passed away before I could absorb the wealth of knowledge he had to offer.

Musical Influences: ELP, Genesis, King Crimson, Beatles, Simon & Garfunkle, Yes, Mahavishnu, Deep Purple, UK, Tull, Marillion, (I think you get the picture) POP and classical. .

Favorite Drummers: Carl Palmer, Simon Phillips, Narada Michael Walden, Terry Bozzio, Bill Bruford, Billy Cobham, Phil Collins, Lenny White, Tony Williams, Buddy Rich, Philly Joe Jones, Elvin Jones, Nick D'Virgilio, Virgil Donati, and just about anyone. Everyone has something to offer and to learn from their contributions to drumming.

Current Listening: Spock's Beard & Transatlantic are the musical oasis these days. I think Neal Morse is incredible. Planet X just raised the bar. I always go back to the original prog artists like Genesis and ELP…….

Favorite Book/Movie: Too numerous to mention, besides, who has time for books and movies????? I prefer a walk with my wife, Sue.

Last book read: A history of King Crimson, usually I read musical or technical information.

Personal Philosophy: It changes everyday.

Paul on Carl: I often say Carl is Witsend/Syzygy. He has the ability to conceptualize the total picture sometimes before any of the band members can. He has a unique style of guitar playing and it is one of a kind. His writing is creative and varied, and I am convinced that he can function in any musical capacity. He is not afraid to try anything new and frequently will exhaust all possibilities before settling on any one idea. On a human level, a generous, thoughtful man. Encouraging and suffers for his art, yet rejoices in the fruits of his labors. The man exudes creativity in any realm. I am fortunate to have him as a friend and musical brother.

Paul on Sam: If Carl is Witsend/Syzygy then Sam is the heart and soul. While Carl sees and completes the total concept, Sam often provides the seed, the genesis, the living essence of the music. Syzygy would not exist without Sam. He can write complex material, intense to soothing. He constantly persues the study of music theory and writing. He thrives on creating and constructing challenging music. A warm easy-going human being. I feel relaxed and peaceful with Sam. My other musical brother and friend.

Paul on Syzygy: A dream come true. I am blessed to have the honor of creating music with Sam & Carl. It is scary how it all came together and continues to fall into place. Unions like this are a gift that not everyone can experience. It has opened many doors for me. I thank God for it.
